Around the World

Can I serve on a mission team?

There are many ways one can serve on a mission team.  There are no age requirements for some options, you don’t have to have an abundance of money, and going to a mission field is not always necessary.  Let’s look at the options:

  1. Prayer – This is the number one need for all mission teams and those they serve.  Prayer is needed for the team to hear God and to do his will, to connect with those they serve in a way that glorifies God, and for their safety and health while on the mission trip.  Prayer is needed for those being served to have an open and willing heart to accept the services and the message of God from the mission team, and for their physical, health and circumstantial conditions in which they are living.
  2. Financial Support – Money is a vital part of any mission trip.  Supporting a mission team with our finances makes us an important part of the mission team.
  3. Donations – A variety of supplies is also needed in many of the mission team destinations.  Donating these goods is another way in which we become a much needed part of the team.
  4. Time – Getting a mission trip organized and the team prepared is a very time consuming project.  Much paperwork is needed and many phone calls made.  Without this being done, a mission trip would not be accomplished.  This is yet another way to become part of the team.
  5. Go/Serve – Be part of the on-site mission team.  Go to the destination of the mission and serve those in need.  (Must meet age requirements)

Just as a body is made up of different parts, so is a mission team.  Some are able to give their time while others are able to give their finances; some serve with their prayers while others serve those in need.

What way is best for me to serve?

Guatemala

One of the greatest opportunities we as God's people have to allow His life to continue to define ours is to experience first-hand what it means to serve the "least of these." To walk a mile in someone else's shoes can dramatically alter your perspective and allow you to see the world as God sees it with a bit more clarity.

Potter's House Association's partners who visit our campus and spend time with the Treasures are forever changed. Not only do they get to share the love of God in tangible ways, but they often find that they come into direct contact with God's love and grace in their own lives. Some realize with greater passion and zeal what God calls each of us to do in caring for the "least of these" and others are overwhelmed with gratitude for God's mercy and provision in their own lives. Whatever your specific experience, you will not visit and be unchanged.

Give Kids The World

Imagine a child whose illness prevents them from enjoying their childhood, from doing the things so many of us take for granted. Imagine a child whose weekly routine includes a steady regimen of medicine, needles, treatments, and pain. Imagine a family that would do anything to ease their child’s pain, to make their child smile, to make their child’s dream come true.

For so many families, these unthinkable odds are a reality. Give Kids The World exists solely to fulfill the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses and their families, providing them a memorable, magical experience that will live in their hearts for years to come.

With the help of over 3,500 devoted volunteer angels, countless compassionate corporate and individual heroes, and dedicated staff members, Give Kids The World is able to give these children and their families the most precious gift of all – the gift of hope. Families enjoy a once in a lifetime opportunity to have fun, to relax, and to spend the type of quality time together absent from their normal daily lives.

EUM Mission Team will be serving at Give Kids The World the week of May 7 - 12, 2012.

UMC Apportionments

As United Methodist we also serve others around the world through our giving. By combining several smaller gifts into a larger amount, we can effect change across the world. Individual churches can minister to a small area; however, as a connectional church, we can do big things all in the name of Jesus Christ. United Methodists support apportioned and designated funds through their connectional gifts (apportionments). The General Conference (www.umc.org) establishes budgets for the denomination's general funds. These are divided among annual conferences, based on a specific formula. Each annual conference (we are in the West Ohio Conference. www.westohioumc.org), using its own approved formula, divides these fund requests, along with conference administrative and benevolence fund requests, among local churches. In addition, individuals, local churches, districts (we are in the Miami Valley District www.miamivalleydistrict.com) and annual conferences may make monetary gifts to the designated funds, of which 100 percent goes directly to a specific project or ministry.

UMCOR

As United Methodist we also support The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) with our giving. UMCOR's mission is to alleviate human suffering - whether caused by war, conflict, or natural disaster - with open minds and hearts to all people. Our church supports this General Board of Global Ministries by participating in the "One Great Hour of Sharing" special offering always held in March. All proceeds go to this disaster relief team of the United Methodist Church. Sharing" special offering always held in March.
